Bumrungrad Review
Medical Tourism Health Check-Up in Bangkok, Thailand
In 2024, I did my annual health check-up at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. My first thought after the appointment was that I never wanted to do my annual check-up in the U.S. again.
If you're considering medical tourism in Thailand, especially for a preventative health screening, here's what my experience was like as someone who visited Bumrungrad for two years in a row. This guide covers what to expect, how much a Bumrungrad health check-up costs, how to choose a package and whether medical tourism in Thailand is worth it.
This post is not sponsored and I paid for my package myself. All opinions are my own.
What is medical tourism in Thailand?
Medical tourism is the practice of traveling to another country for medical care, often for more affordable pricing, faster service and higher-quality patient experience. I had never thought much about medical tourism until I moved to Hong Kong in 2021, where I learned that people often traveled to Thailand for annual health-checkups, South Korea for cosmetic procedures and Taiwan for fertility treatments. Because these places also happen to be popular travel destinations, many people combine healthcare with a vacation.
Why do people travel to Thailand for medical tourism?
In 2024, I realized that I hadn't had a proper check-up since moving from San Francisco to Hong Kong three years prior. This was something that I never looked forward to, because even with health insurance in the U.S., I never had positive experiences with the healthcare system there. Like many Americans, I associated doctor visits with long waits, confusing billing and an overall unpleasant experience.
When I heard that the comprehensive health screening experience at Bumrungrad was not only more affordable, but also, dare I say, efficient and pleasant, it piqued my interest and I knew I wanted to try it out while I was living in Asia. It exceeded every expectation that I had for a hospital visit.
How to choose a Bumrungrad health check-up package
When I first looked at the Bumrungrad health check-up packages that were available, I was overwhelmed by the number of choices, but also pleasantly surprised at how many inclusive options there were. They have a variety of choices based on your gender, age and specific health concerns. Bumrungrad also has a dedicated Pride Clinic offering personalized care for LGBTQ+ patients - something that my friend, a U.S.-based sex therapist, told me is still rare in American hospitals.
I personally chose the Regular Program (Female) at the Health Checkup & Screening Center. This program is designed for healthy adults under the age of 30 and includes a blood test, physical exam, urine and stool analysis, EKG, chest X-ray, pap smear and pelvic exam. After purchasing the package online, you can simply call to schedule your appointment.
Bumrungrad health check-up cost in 2026
When I bought the Regular Program in 2024, it was approximately 218 USD, but as of 2026, it's now approximately 337 USD. Bumrungrad also accepts many international insurance plans. My insurance from my corporate job in Hong Kong covered about half of the total cost, so I paid approximately 100 USD out of pocket. For what is included, this price is far cheaper than what you can get in the U.S.
Where to stay near Bumrungrad
The first time I did my health check-up in Bumrungrad, I stayed at the Ad Lib Bangkok, which is the most convenient option as it's located right next to the hospital. I stayed in the Junior Suite with Bathtub, which was a treat to relax in. Although the location was great for the morning of my appointment, it's not necessary to stay right next to the hospital. You can easily stay anywhere in central Bangkok and take a short Grab ride or taxi. Just make sure to factor in an extra 10-15 minutes to find the right building within the large hospital complex.
What to expect during your Bumrungrad appointment
Walking into Bumrungrad feels more like entering a five-star hotel than a hospital. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the check-in floor was how elegant it was. I arrived around 8 a.m. for my appointment and after checking in, they gave me a checklist with all of the tests that were included in my package, as well as a wristband for identification.
I moved through each test in stations, guided by the staff. After the blood test and physical exam, they provided hospital clothes and slippers to change into for the remaining screenings. Every section is handled by a physician or specialist. Staff mark off each completed test before sending you to the next station. Despite how busy it was, I never waited long. The entire system runs like a well-oiled machine.
Same-day test results and doctor consultation
Once all of the tests were completed, I waited about an hour for my test results. In the meantime, they served a small, healthy breakfast buffet catered by JW Marriott Bangkok. After fasting for the blood test, I was served a warm bowl of congee with soft boiled egg, ginger and scallions - an unexpectedly thoughtful touch.
When the results were ready, I met with a physician who reviewed the entirety of the results with me. There, I was able to ask questions, discuss lifestyle changes and understand any follow-ups immediately. The entire appointment was 2-3 hours and I had my results in-hand before leaving.
Bumrungrad vs. U.S. healthcare experience
Overall, it was the best hospital experience I've ever had. Not only was the environment beautiful and clean, making it feel like an upscale hotel, but the staff were also friendly and efficient, which I think has much to do with the culture in Thailand which is generally very respectful. They didn't ever let us wait for very long and I also appreciated that the lab results were expedited so you don't have to wait days or weeks for them. You can get your results and discuss with the physician right away. The catered, healthy breakfast was also a thoughtful detail.
Why this went viral on Instagram
When I posted about my experience on Instagram, it went viral almost instantly. In the comments section, people 1) shared their own great experiences in Bumrungrad, 2) shared their horror stories from the U.S. healthcare system or 3) were shocked at how many tests were included for the price. It became clear how frustrated many Americans feel with their healthcare experiences.
Medical tourism is a privilege
While the cost of a health check-up at Bumrungrad is affordable by U.S. standards, especially for those who don't have health insurance, the pricing is relatively high for local Thai residents. In that way, Bumrungrad is clearly designed for international patients.
However, if you are already planning a trip to Bangkok or have the means to incorporate this into your travels, it's absolutely worth considering. It's also invaluable to experience quality healthcare and also get a second opinion on your health from a different perspective.

Do you need to fast before the health check-up?
Yes, you'll be instructed to fast for 12 hours for accurate blood test results, so plan accordingly.

At least 1-2 weeks ahead, especially during peak travel seasons.

Would I do it again?
I already have. I returned the following year and brought my husband, who was equally impressed. My ideal plan is to do an Asia trip every year and add an annual health check-up to the agenda, adjusting the packages as my health needs change over time. One thing's for sure - it will be difficult going back to the U.S. medical system after this.
